The Case for Doing Less: A Minimalist’s Manifesto for 2026

By Vincent Van Duysen, The Quiet Minimalist

Witty, irreverent, fun. He makes you laugh while making you think about your lamp.

Hey friends! After years of collecting, layering, and filling every corner, many of us are craving the opposite: quieter rooms, clearer surfaces, and more breathing room. In 2026, doing less isn’t about empty white boxes — it’s about intentional calm that feels warm and livable.

Here’s my gentle manifesto for living (and decorating) with less this year.

Start by Editing, Not Adding

The fastest way to feel the benefits of less is to remove what no longer serves you. Clear surfaces, edit bookshelves, and let go of pieces you keep only out of habit. Every object you release makes the ones that remain more meaningful.

Choose Quality Over Quantity

Own fewer things, but make sure the ones you keep feel good to touch and look at every day. A single well-made chair, a beautiful wooden table, or a soft linen sofa will bring more lasting pleasure than a room full of average pieces.

Protect Negative Space

Empty space is not wasted space — it’s what lets the eye rest and the mind calm down. Leave walls partially bare, keep tabletops mostly clear, and resist the urge to fill every corner. The quiet areas make the whole room feel larger and more peaceful.

Let Materials and Light Do the Work

When you own less, the beauty of real materials becomes more noticeable. Wood grain, linen weave, stone, and soft daylight become the main decoration. Layered lighting still matters, but one or two good sources are often enough.

Make “Less” Feel Like Home

Minimalism only works when it still feels personal. Keep a few meaningful objects, a favorite book stack, or a single plant. The goal isn’t perfection or emptiness — it’s a home that supports how you actually want to live.

Doing less is not about deprivation. It’s about creating room — physical and mental — for what matters most. In 2026, the most luxurious homes may simply be the quietest ones.
